A digital asset management system, shortened as DAM, is a system which manages the decisions and the tasks which surround the annotation, ingestion, storage, retrieval, cataloguing, and distribution of digital assets. Some examples of digital assets which might require the use of a digital asset management system include music, videos, digital photos, and animations.

Digital asset management systems are usually composed of software which accomplishes the above task. DAM software can be open source or proprietary, usually depending on the size of the business entity which comes up with the software.

Usually, in the use of a brand asset management system, the material being used is usually a logo, a slogan, or product specs or imagery, as well as fonts and color schemes, among other things.

Digital asset management systems can also be known as collaborative software or content management or data proliferation software, because of the many uses that it has within the scope of a large organization. Depending on the needs of the organization, a digital asset management system can perform one or more of these uses.
